> **Karwij** (*Carum carvi,* ook wel: **kummel**) is een [tweejarige plant](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweejarige_plant) die behoort tot de [schermbloemenfamilie](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schermbloemenfamilie) (*Apiaceae* of *Umbelliferae*). De soort komt in het wild voor in West-Azië, Noord-Afrika en Europa waar hij in weilanden, bermen en op dijken groeit. De plant wordt ook wel *echte-*, of *wilde karwij* genoemd. Hij wordt ook veel geteeld om het zaad. De plant wordt 30-60 cm hoog en heeft fijne, [langwerpig-eironde](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bladvorm), dubbelgeveerde [bladeren](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blad). De plant vormt een [penwortel](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penwortel) (Wikipedia).

> <span style="color: #333333">Wetenschappelijk onderzoek wijst uit dat anijs, kaneel, karwij en venkel zowel antibacteriële als schimmelwerende effecten hebben (Bonyadian & Moshtaghi, 2008), (Razzaghi-Abyaneh et al., 2009), (Soliman & Badeaa, 2002), (Ponepal et al., 1996), (Peñalver et al., 2005). In de Duitse Commission E monografieën (een therapeutische gids voor de kruidengeneeskunde) staat de combinatie van karwij, venkel en anijs bekend om de gezamenlijke werking bij dyspepsie (een pijnlijk gevoel in de maagstreek). </span>
